Drive north on Connecticut’s scenic Route 7 along the meandering banks of the Housatonic River and you will arrive in beautiful Cornwall. This charming Connecticut town is approximately 95 miles north of New York City and situated on the east bank of the river. It is nestled in one of the northwest corner’s most mountainous areas and contains a major portion of the Mohawk State Forest. The principal communities of Cornwall include Cornwall Bridge, West Cornwall and Cornwall Center. The area offers a plethora of outdoor activities from skiing at Mohawk Mountain to fly fishing on the Housatonic, many site seeing opportunities, beautiful sweeping landscapes, and plenty of historic charm.
Located just off of Route 7 in the community of West Cornwall is the famous West Cornwall Covered Bridge. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the Bridge is considered an excellent example of the Town Lattice Truss. The barn red, single lane bridge was built in 1864 and still stands today as one of northwest Connecticut’s most oft painted and photographed masterpieces. A site worth seeing! Once you cross the bridge into the small town center you are greeted with New England charm. Also in Cornwall Bridge is the Cornwall Bridge Pottery Storewww.cbpots.com one of the country’s most prolific producers of woodfired pots for everyday use.
Cornwall Center is located just up the road on Route 4 and offers one of the area’s most outstanding views of the south valley. Bring the kids because Mohawk Mountain is nearby and has offered the area’s finest skiing and instruction since 1948.
